CIS membership
Ostrčilova Primary and Nursery School have been awarded membership of the Council of International Schools (CIS), the first state school in the Czech Republic ever to have received this accolade.
In June 2009, the Combined Nursery and Primary School at 1 Ostrčilova Street in the Moravian district of the city of Ostrava became, by virtue of its bilingual department (OIS), a member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) which has its headquarters in Spain.
Membership comes with a number of benefits. In particular, it will allow the school to implement a standard international curriculum which includes the use of an internationally accepted system of marking. It also allows the school to utilize services such as, for example, support in the process of obtaining further accreditation, assistance in the employment of teachers, consultations on school management and other matters and specialist courses for professionals. „In the long term, this school aspires to offer a quality education and membership of the CIS gives us important added value“, said Head Teacher, Dagmar Dluhošová. She added: „Our students also gain the possibility of studying in a network of schools worldwide“.
The Combined Nursery and Primary School at 1 Ostrčilova Street is the first ever state school in the Czech Republic to have attained CIS membership. „I really value the success of the school and appreciate the effort that the entire pedagogical team dedicates to the quality of education“, said Miroslav Svozil, Mayor of the city district of Moravian Ostrava. „This school also increases the prestige of our city district and the whole of Ostrava“, he added.
Obtaining membership was preceded by a visit by the CIS accreditation team representative who personally assessed conditions at the school and the manner of its operation, talking to teachers in the process as well as to pupils. The CIS has 600 schools and 400 faculties and universities all over the world. CIS membership is open to all international schools which promote and nurture international feeling among students and follow the CIS‘s code of ethics.
Ostrava International School (OIS) offers a bilingual education (Czech and English) to children of all nationalities from the ages of 3-15. At present, it has 92 nursery school pupils and 117 pupils in the primary school.
